My Favorite Blogspams

I’ve been running Akismet on this blog since day one and it’s been absolutely fantastic at catching blog spam. The false positive percentage has been nearly zero – somewhere in the 0.01% range. I normally sort through the akismet stuff every other day and double check for any errors. I’ve gathered up a few of my favorite spams for your entertainment:

SEORockstars Hacked

I gotta say this is the first time one of my sites have ever been hacked. I especially like the spinning green skull and crossbones. Funny thing is we finally recruited some new bloggers and there was actually some useful content on the site. Check it out here.

Here’s a screenshot for posterity:

Successful Blogging Takes Original Thought

I’ve been reading around a lot of blogs lately and come to the conclusion that in order to foster blog readership and comment contribution you need some creative original ideas. So here we go:

Linkurbation

I have a new favorite linkurbator – Rand Fishkin. I’m probably one of the last people on the planet to add SEOmoz to my feed reader but I’ve been getting some good amusement lately from Rand’s excellent ability to put out some good posts that, IMHO, are purely link bait. Check out these titles:

Luv u Rand – BFF? :)

ToddFriesen.com

So I’m doing my usual rambling about on SEO Rockstars tonight and this dude I’ve never met before is hangin in the chat and he pipes up after the show that he just registered toddfriesen.com (my real name for you new to the blog). Yes – totally my bad for not having registered it but it turns out that this is a stand up guy and once he’s had his fun yanking my chain he graciously offers to hand over the domain. Tip of the hat to Modern SEO. That’s class.

Wikiliaty – Hello ColbertNation.com

For any of you Colbert Report fans out there you’ll be well familiar with ColbertNation.com. Colbert mentions them on nearly every show and they have their URL in the credits at the end of the show. Not bad. As an SEO/Viral Marketer that’s the kind of thing I dream of. Tho I suppose I’d actually have to get off my ass and build a real website about something first…

Anyhow…I stop by ColbertNation.com on a fairly regular basis and I definitly wanted to see what they had to say about the whole Wikipedia battle that’s been raging and I was disappointed to see that the site hasn’t been updated since July 28. Where’s the dedication? the love? It seems Avery and Bert missed out covering the best thing Stephen’s done yet. It’s all over the forums but not on the blog. I’d much rather read the blog than wade the ALL CAPS postings of rabid Colbert fans.
That said I will grant that perhaps they are busy with the new forums at ColbertNation.com. Roughly 2 weeks old and already 3329 registered users and over 30K posts. Nicely done.

Somebody mention this blog on a TV show please.

Wikiality Part Deux

Well, Colbert did it again. Just a couple minutes ago he suggested someone make some changes to the entry on wikipedia for latchkey kids. I grabbed my laptop, fired it up, typed in wikipedia.org and already the page had been locked. Check out the discussion.

Just in case anyone was wondering, it took approximately 13 seconds from the point when Colbert made his statement for the site to be “protected.” User:Dragonstrider 04:05, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Why can’t Colbert’s opinion on laychkey’s be voiced?

Cause the moderators here suck. (68.32.79.169 03:59, 3 August 2006 (UTC))

So now we have 2 groups; those that watch The Colbert Report with a wikipedia window open waiting for Colbert to tell them what to new fact to spread and another group that waits to find out what pages they need to lock. For reference I’m in the former group. Death to Wikipedia!! ;)

Somebody give Colbert a sainthood or knight him or just buy him a beer. This is too much fun.

Colbert Picks on Wikipedia

So last night I stayed up late to watch two of my favorite shows; The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I was well rewarded for fighting off the sandman and staying awake that extra hour. Steven Colbert made a nice mockery of Wikipedia:

Shortly after he told everyone to head over to Wikipedia and change the African elephants page I grabbed the laptop and went elephant hunting and found this message on the top of the African elephants page:

This page has been temporarily protected from editing to deal with vandalism. Please discuss changes on the talk page or request unprotection. You may use {{editprotected}} on the talk page to ask for an administrator to make an edit for you.

Here’s a screenshot:

So I logged in (yes I have an account simply to see how fast stuff gets changed back when I add accuracy to a story – hehe) and here’s a screen shot of the changelog. Can you guess about what time Steven told people to change the page?
